Update: Man Who Jumped from Bridge Dies

The man who jumped from the Severn River Bridge died, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

UPDATE (7:14 p.m. Monday)—Steven Vonzel Anderson died at , according to hospital spokesman Kelly Swan.

CORRECTION: An earlier edition of this article incorrectly stated that Anderson was released from the hospital Monday. Patch regrets the error.

Anderson, 56, jumped from the Severn River Bridge on Wednesday afternoon and plunged into the water. He  minutes later by Fred Kelly, the Severn Riverkeeper, and Joe Horton, a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician from Pasadena, who rushed to his aid.

Anderson was listed in stable condition Wednesday by the Maryland State Police but by Thursday morning, he was listed in critical condition. On Friday afternoon, his condition was listed as "under assessment." Swan said Monday that Anderson had died.

Kelly, the "Severn Riverkeeper," told Patch his grandson, Brandon Donoway, was on the bridge at the time and called Kelly on his cell phone. Kelly has his boat docked nearby and ready for such emergencies, he said.

"There was a crowd on the bridge giving us a running commentary as we were saving this guy, but Joe [Horton] and I were the only ones down there making it happen," Kelly said.

Horton said he was also on the bridge when he saw Anderson pull his car over and jump off into the water, more than a hundred feet below. He gave Patch

Horton ran down to the beach, stripped to his boxers and paddled out in a kayak. Kelly arrived shortly after in his boat. Together, Kelly and Horton were able to lift Anderson out of the water and bring him to the shore, where emergency workers were ready to take him to the hospital.
