Broadneck Man Killed in Annapolis Motorcycle Accident

Thursday morning's motorcycle accident results in two fatal injuries.

Broadneck resident Craig E. "Van" Eney, 20, was one of the victims in a fatal motorcycle crash early Thursday morning in Historic Annapolis.

A Severna Park teenager Kelcey R. Silva, 19, also died on the scene, according to a press release Friday morning.

The accident occurred at 1:08 a.m. Thursday at King George Street, near Route 450, according to the Annapolis Police Department (APD). The roads were closed for several hours while the accident was under investigation.

According to police, an officer stopped the motorcycle for traffic violations at the intersection of Compromise Street and Duke of Gloucester shortly before the accident. The motorcycle driver had violated several traffic laws, according to an APD news release.

When the officer approached the motorcycle on foot, the operator drove away at a high speed, police said.

The officer requested that neighboring police agencies be notified of the incident. When the officer arrived near King George Street, the Department of Defense Police Department was already on the scene, according to a press release.

"It is unfortunate that the motorcycle operator decided to flee from the police," Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop said in the release. "His actions cost him and his passenger their lives. Our preliminary investigation shows the officer was within policy and exercised prudence and good judgment. My thoughts are with the families of both victims in this tragedy."

Editor's Note:  The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Eney had past run-ins with the law between 2008 and last year, including a marijuana possession charge and four traffic violations that included failing to present a driver's license, speeding and riding in a jeep without a seat belt.
