Falling Ice Damages 10 Vehicles on Bay Bridge

A woman described how her car, carrying her two daughters, was damaged by falling ice on Monday.

As the snow and ice melted Monday afternoon, many saw mounds of powder falling from trees. But what happens if you're traveling more than 50 miles per hour across the Bay Bridge?

A Maryland Transportation Authority spokesperson said 10 vehicles were damaged as a result of the falling ice and snow on Monday, but no one was injured.

Cape St. Claire resident Angie Cassidy and her two daughters, ages 4 and 12, were traveling over the bridge early Monday morning, and said their windshield shattered after ice fell from the suspension cables. Cassidy provided Patch with photos of the damage.

"My windshield shattered as well as the passenger side rear-view mirror. I relied on what I could see out of the driver side window and the driver's side rear-view mirror in order to safely come to a stop," Cassidy said.

Emergency vehicles were quick to assist, she said. They towed her vehicle to a weigh station, where two other vehicles had also been damaged by falling snow and ice.

Cassidy said it made her wonder what can be done about such a thing.

"If it is common, why isn't more done to safeguard commuters from what could be a deadly situation?" she asked.

Maryland Transportation Authority spokeswoman Kelly Melhem said the agency closed two lanes in the westbound span of the bridge Monday morning, and reopened them several hours later, after it was deemed safe.

"We closed the right and center lanes for a portion of the morning and afternoon on the Bay Bridge westbound, due to ice and snow falling form the cables and towers in the suspension portion of the bridge," Melhem said. "Approximately 10 vehicles sustained windshield damage, but no injuries were involved."
