UPDATE: Head On Collision on Route 50 West

Traffic tied up on Route 50 this morning as victims transported by helicopter to Shock Trauma.

Update:  The Anne Arundel County Police have released the names of the the two drivers involved in the early morning accident on Route 50 westbound.

According to the release, a 2007 Honda Civic being operated by Ryan Christopher John, age 24 of Greenbelt, was travelling east in the westbound lanes of Route 50. Just east of the overpass for Bay Dale Drive, the Honda struck a black 2005 Kia driven by Michael Dickinson Gurd, age 23 of Bethesda, head on. The Kia was driving westbound on Route 50 in the middle lane.  

The release also said both drivers sustained possible life threatening injuries and were transported by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Shock Trauma Unit. Gurd is listed in serious condition and John was treated and later released.

The initial investigation indicates that negligent/reckless driving, driver error, and alcohol contributed to this crash, according to the release. The investigation of this crash continues.

A head-on collision involving two cars on Route 50 westbound between Cape St. Claire Road and Bay Dale Drive sent two men to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore early Saturday morning, a county fire department spokesman said.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Two men, 25 and 26, were both flown to shock trauma with serious injuries, said Lt. Cliff Kooser of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

County police are investigating the cause of the accident, said police spokesman Lt. Glenn Shanahan.
