Man Gets 6 Years for Attacking Mother with Hammer

Benscoter says he's not sure if he can ever forgive himself, The Capital reported.

An Annapolis man will serve six years in jail for beating his mother with a hammer in March.

Robert Benscoter, 34, of the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court, Annapolis, pleaded guilty in September to the attempted second-degree murder of his 61-year-old mother.

In March, police arrested Benscoter for striking his mother, Jo Benscoter, with a hammer repeatedly in the head and torso, according to a police report. When police arrived at the scene, Benscoter fled, leading police on a chase involving K-9 units. He was apprehended more than an hour later in a wooded area near Commanders Way.

During Benscoter's sentencing hearing on Thursday in Annapolis, The Capital reported that his mother was scheduled to appear, but did not out of fear of her son. In court, Benscoter apologized for his actions, but said he did not know if he could ever forgive himself.

Benscoter was sentenced to serve six years in jail, with an additional five years on supervised probation, and was ordered to make no contact with his mother, according to online court records.
