Man Pleads Guilty in Attack on Mother with Hammer

Robert Nolan Benscoter could face up to 12 years in prison for the attempted second-degree murder of his mother.

A man pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court on Thursday of attempting to kill his mother with a hammer in their Annapolis home.

Robert Benscoter, 33, of the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court, Annapolis, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder, according to online court records.

In March, police arrested Benscoter for striking his mother, Jo Benscoter, 61, with a hammer repeatedly in the head and torso, according to a police report. When police arrived at the scene, Benscoter had fled, leading police on a chase involving K-9 units. He was apprehended more than an hour later in a wooded area near Commanders Way.

The Capital reported that the attack occurred after Benscoter believed that his mother intended to report his misuse of her credit card to police. Jo Benscoter said she wants her son to serve at least 10 years in prison for the attack, according The Capital.

Benscoter is being held without bond until his sentencing hearing on Dec. 18, where he faces up to 12 years in prison for the attempted second-degree murder charge.
