Men Rescue Severn River Bridge Jumper

Officials said a man jumped from the Severn River Bridge Wednesday afternoon and was saved by two other men, one of them suffering hypothermia as part of the rescue. The incident reportedly occurred around 2:23 p.m.

The jumper was Steven Vonzell Anderson, 56, of Annapolis, said Maryland State Police Cpl. David Johnson.

He was found face-down in the Severn River and pulled ashore by two men who went to his rescue in boats, said Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Capt. James Rostek.

One of those rescuers, an unidentified man, was treated for hypothermia shortly after arriving on shore, but refused to be transported to the hospital, Rostek said.

Anderson was transported to (AAMC), and went into cardiac arrest shortly after being pulled to shore. He was last listed in stable condition at AAMC, Johnson said.

The Capital reported that Arnold resident Brandon Donoway, 26, saw the initial jumper swerve from a lane of traffic, get out of his car and jump off the bridge. Donoway then called his grandfather, the Severn Riverkeeper Fred Kelly, who lives close by. Kelly was the other man who helped rescue Anderson.

Donoway and Kelly could not be reached for comment.
