Mother, Son Fight Fire Before Firefighters Arrive

Boy transported to an area hospital for burns after late-night fire.

A mother and her 14-year-old son used fire extinguishers to keep a fire from spreading in their home in the 1400 block of Old Jones Station Road Tuesday night, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived at the house around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday and saw heavy smoke coming from the left side of the house. The fire began from ashes discarded in a trash can in a bedroom, said Steve Thompson, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

The mother and son used two fire extinguishers, which kept the fire contained before firefighters arrived. However, Thompson said the fire department encourages residents to get out of a burning building as quickly as possible instead of staying in and trying to fight a fire.

"Unless you can do it without injury, leave it to us," he said. "We prefer [people] just to get out."

The 14-year-old boy was transported to an area hospital for minor burns, Thompson said. The fire caused approximately $10,000 in damage to the home.
