The Arnold Volunteer Fire Department received a certificate of recognition from the state comptroller on Tuesday in honor of its years of service to the area.
State Comptroller Peter Franchot presented the certificate to Company President Thomas Best, along with Volunteer Chief Randy Hopkins and Anne Arundel County Fire Chief John Robert Ray.
“In celebration of your first-rate emergency service to the citizens of the greater Arnold area, by utilizing trained volunteers to ensure a safe environment and a rapid response to local emergencies," the certificate reads in part.
Organized in 1943, the Arnold Volunteer Fire Department has remained a central part of the Broadneck community, located at their original Ritchie Highway site. In 2012, the company answered more than 3,500 calls for service. In addition to emergency service, the membership provides annual community services and activities.
