Broadneck Park Playground Getting $35,000 in Renovations

A councilman said he would like more playground equipment for children.

The playground at stands to get a $35,000 makeover thanks to Anne Arundel County's 

Within the county Recreation and Parks Department's portion of the budget is $900,000 in renovations for parks across the county. Among that portion, Broadneck Park is considered at the top of the list, according to county Councilman Dick Ladd (R-5th District), of Broadneck.

Ladd said $35,000 is slated to go toward Broadneck Park's playground. But exactly how it will be used is still being discussed, he said.

"I believe that the playground is structurally fine, and as far as I know the park people feel the same way. However, there are some improvements that could be made, such as fencing and some new equipment for younger children," Ladd said.

Ladd said he believes that there will be discussions among Parks Department personnel for what improvements would make the area better for everyone, noting that there's a lack of equipment for children between the ages of 2-5.

"Personally, the equipment for children has me the most interested," Ladd said.

The news came as a surprise to Arnold resident  for the past few months. She created the Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP) as a way to spearhead the fundraising effort. In April, she hosted

McGuirk-Allison said in an email to Patch that she was excited at the funding the park would receive, and thanked the officials who made it happen in this year's budget.

"I am beyond elated at this surprising development. Clearly the voices of the community were heard and appreciated," McGuirk wrote. "In the next few weeks, I will have a clearer picture of what this means for FBP. In the meantime, we are encouraged to continue our fundraising efforts and join with the county to create a fabulous playground, accessible to children with disabilities."

The Friends of Broadneck Park will be hosting a series of fundraising events throughout the summer, including a golf tournament. For more information on the group and the events, check its website.
