Busy Broadneck Roads to See Closures in Coming Weeks

During construction work, regular traffic patterns will be disrupted at times on Bay Dale and College Parkway during the days and some nights.

Drivers on Bay Dale Road will see some lane disruptions in the coming months as 2,500 linear feet of sewer mains are re-lined.

Just around the July 4 holiday, Anne Arundel County delivered 42-inch temporary bypass sewer pipes along Bay Dale Road, which will be used to divert sewage from the existing underground lines.

Once the temporary above-ground lines are in place, the buried sewer mains will be cleaned out, inspected and relined, said Chuck Bostek, project manager with Anne Arundel County’s Department of Public Works. The project is slated for completion mid-September, according to the county.

The work is taking place on Bay Dale Road from College Parkway to Broadneck Road. During construction, regular traffic patterns will be disrupted at times but the contractor should post any changes ahead of time. Work will take place during the days and some nights.

The contract to re-line the sewers was given to Insituform Technologies, Inc. headquartered in St. Louis, MO. The company developed the process to reline existing pipes 40 years ago. This contract cost is $771,000, which also includes some work on Tick Neck Road in Pasadena. A similar project is also happening on Benfield Road in Severna Park, Bostek added.

“After we clean and inspect the lines, we use a felt tube that we insert with water pressure into the sewer pipes,” Bostek said. According to the Insituform website, the felt liners are saturated with a resin. When the liners are installed, they are heated with hot water or steam to cure
the resin and form a tight-fitting and jointless replacement pipe.

The project is part of a county program to proactively inspect and reline sewer pipes before problems arise.
