Capital: AACC seeking Attorney General Opinion on County Audit

On Saturday, The Capital reported that AACC officials are questioning the legality of the County Council's recent audit request while still vowing to supply the financial information sought.

County Auditor Teresa Sutherland filed a Public Information Act request on Monday on behalf of the county council requesting financial information the council had asked for from in a July resolution, according to a story in The Capital on Saturday.

The council’s resolution came after an  as a result of a decrease in county funding for the next fiscal year. Since then, The Capital has also reported on an agreement between college president Martha A. Smith and the Board to pay her nearly $700,000 in unused sabbatical time when she steps down next year.

AACC officials have solicited an opinion from the attorney general on the legality of the county council’s request, first brought up by the county's own deputy attorney David Plymyer, questioning whether the council has the authority to conduct a "performance audit" of the board’s management vs. a financial review.

AACC officials maintain they are willing to provide the financial information requested and are confused why Sutherland filed the PIA request.
