County Seeks Assistance with Emergency Exercise

In the wake of recent disasters, residents are encouraged to participate in an exercise that will measure the county's sheltering abilities.

Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold is encouraging citizens to participate as volunteers in an upcoming full-scale emergency exercise at Arundel High in Odenton.

Leopold said the exercise comes at an opportune time considering recent natural disasters in 2011.

Most recently, a tornado ripped through Joplin, MO, killing at least 132 people, making it the deadliest tornado in a half century.

“It is important to test our capabilities so that Anne Arundel county is ready for an emergency situation,” Leopold said in a statement Tuesday. “We have seen disasters recently in the Midwest and South that happen quickly with little notice.”

On Friday, June 17, the county's Office of Emergency Management, Department of Social Services, Department of Health, American Red Cross and other partners will host the emergency sheltering exercise at Arundel High.

Organizers are seeking at least 75 volunteers to participate in the exercise to assess the county’s sheltering capabilities, according to the release.

People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities are welcome.

To participate in the exercise, volunteers should contact Karen Sank at 410-222-0611 or email her at fdsank00@aacounty.org.
