Details of Schaefer's Viewing, Procession Released

The details of the public services and viewings for former Gov. William Donald Schaefer were released this morning and the proceedings could lead to some significant traffic problems.

Schaefer’s body is scheduled to lie in state at the Maryland State House in downtown Annapolis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

Gov. Martin O’Malley and an honor guard from the Maryland National Guard will greet the casket at 9:30 a.m. on State Circle in front of the Maryland Inn, near School Street.

The State House Rotunda will be opened for public viewing at 10 a.m. The public may line up at the front entrance of the State House—opposite Lawyer’s Mall—as early as they like, according to a release from the governor’s office.

Viewers are encouraged to arrive no later than 1 p.m. as the motorcade for Baltimore is scheduled to leave at 2 p.m.

The public also is encouraged to park at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at Gate 5. Shuttle service will be provided to the State House.

State Police said road closures are not anticipated on the motorcade’s journey from Annapolis to Baltimore, though they said drivers should expect possible delays.

The motorcade will travel on Rowe Boulevard, heading west to Route 50, according to a state police release. It will then merge onto northbound Interstate 97, merge with Interstate 695 west toward Towson.

From the inner loop of I-695, it will travel onto Interstate 95 north and exit at Caton Avenue to begin the tour of Baltimore.

State police said drivers should expect temporary road closures in Baltimore during the tour. On Monday afternoon, Schaefer’s motorcade will make its way through several Baltimore neighborhoods and past various landmarks, including his childhood home, the Hippodrome, Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor.

His body will then lie in state once more at Baltimore City Hall from 6 to 9 p.m, as well as 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and the rotunda will be opened for public viewing.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Old St. Paul’s Church, Baltimore. Interment will be at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Hunt Valley.
