Health Dept. Issues Water Advisories for Broadneck Area

Lake Claire and Magothy Manor communities urged to avoid contact with water due to high levels of bacteria.

UPDATE:  Advisory has been lifted as of Friday, June 23.

The Anne Arundel County Health Department has issued an advisory to avoid direct water contact at Lake Claire in Cape St. Claire and Magothy Manor in Arnold, both located on the Magothy River, due to results of high bacteria levels found in water samples received today. Herald Harbor, located in Crownsville on the Severn River, is also under an advisory as is Glen Isle in Riva.

According to a department release, the beaches are tested regularly as part of the Department’s summer recreational water quality sampling program, which monitors more than 100 community beaches. The advisories will remain in effect until water samples show bacterial levels to be acceptable.

The Department of Health reports it has posted advisory signs in the affected
areas and advises anyone who has come in contact with affected water to wash well with soap and warm water immediately. Clothing should also be washed.

There are many factors that can cause high bacteria readings that, the department said, nature will fix in a few days.

For more information on the status of the advisories, visit the Department’s website, www.aahealth.org, or call the Water Quality Line at 410-222-7999.
