Top 5 Stories: Finger Pointing, Quilting, New Child Care

Throughout this week, Patch featured stories from several editors in an ongoing series about the vacant District 1 seat on the Anne Arundel County Council.

As a result, many of the top stories of the week are politically driven. But the week also had its fair share of bright and dark spots, aside from the politics of the county.

Steven Vonzel Anderson, 56, jumped from the Severn River Bridge on the afternoon of March 7. Moments later, he  by two men who rushed to his aid. But days later, Anderson succumbed to his injuries and died at Anne Arundel Medical Center. And one of his in an unrelated incident.

Many Anne Arundel County councilmen claim a political game is being played over the vacant District 1 seat at the expense of the district's constituents.

Patch editors interviewed each of the six councilmen to gauge their position in the division over who should fill the District 1 seat.

The Anne Arundel County Council declared Daryl Jones' seat vacant, and the remaining six members still cannot agree on his replacement. Patch asked readers if they could do better, and who they would choose to fill the seat.

A new child care center opened Thursday in Broadneck with a mission to help parents carve out a few hours for themselves on hectic weekdays.

Parents can drop their children off for hours at a time with no appointment. This frees parents up to take care of necessary chores around town or other daily activities in their busy weeks, said owner Jody Baldwin.

Girl Scout Troop 1832 showed off their quilting project, celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouts in the USA and 50 years in Maryland, at a gathering at the  on Monday night. The quilt is the work of 220 girls in Girl Scout Service Unit 44.

Each girl fashioned a square block for the quilt showing what they think about the Girl Scouts. The blocks featured campfires, roasting marshmallows, sleeping bags, soccer, friends, animals and much more.
