AACC President Smith's Last Day is Tuesday

Smith's 18-year tenure as president of AACC ends on Wednesdayds, when new president Dawn Lindsay will take over the position.

's president for the past 18 years is set to retire after Tuesday.

Martha Smith's successor, , will take over the position starting Wednesday. Lindsay is the former president of Glendale Community College in California. Her starting salary is $234,500.

A celebration of Smith's career was held at the end of May. But there is no special event planned for the final day of her tenure, college spokeswoman Laurie Farrell said. By Tuesday morning, Smith was no longer on the Arnold campus, Farrell said.

But Smith has said she wants to stay involved at the college, and has a five-year consulting deal with AACC.

When Lindsay begins serving as president Wednesday, Farrell said she has a solid day of appointments booked up.

"She'll be spending time around campus, getting to know the college community," Farrell said.

When Lindsay was , she said she didn't have any express goals. She said she wanted to learn what made AACC great to begin with.

"I think it would be a little presumptuous of me to come in and have ideas, because the college is so solid," Lindsay said. "I think my first goal is learning how this college has turned into an academic institution with such rigor and excellence and passion."

 the group shared tears and memories while thanking Smith for her service to the college. They also gave her a rocking chair as a retirement gift.

Lindsay's first official meeting with the board won't be until its next regular session, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 11.
