BHS Principal Discusses Homecoming Week

In his monthly newsletter, Broadneck's principal talks about upcoming events in September and October at the high school.

The following article was written by Broadneck High School Principal David G. Smith in the school's September-October newsletter.

We are beginning to receive notification of the honors that BHS students have earned in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Congratulations to Bridget Derksen and Evan Uthus.  They are semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition and have the opportunity to win a National Merit Scholarship.  As time goes on, more of our students will be recognized in this program.  Students earn recognition with a very high combined score on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test that was given in October of 2011.

This year the PSAT will be given during the morning of Wednesday, October 17.  While 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will take the PSAT, only Juniors will be eligible for the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Competition.  The PSAT is given to 9th and 10th grade students so that weaknesses can be identified and work can be done to build skills in general and in those areas specifically.  In addition, by taking the PSAT, students become familiar with the format of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which is used in the college admission process.  Please send your 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to school on Wednesday, October 17 well rested, well fed and with their #2 pencils and calculator in hand so that they are ready to do well on the PSAT.

The Anne Arundel County College Fair sponsored by and held at Broadneck High School—will occur on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 during the evening.

Approximately two hundred colleges, universities, technical schools and military representatives will be present to provide information and answer questions to inform your post high school planning.  The event begins at 6:30 pm, is held in Main and Auxiliary Gyms and is open to all Anne Arundel County Public and Private School students.

Homecoming will occur during the week of October 15.  Activities will culminate on Saturday, October 20 with the Parade, Football Game and Dance.  Seniors will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets for the dance.  Each class will have their opportunity to purchase tickets in turn.  As we approach Homecoming more information about the dance will be provided.

The Broadneck High School Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) has recently launched their new web site. Here is the link to it:  www.BroadneckPTSO.com.

The BHS Athletic Boosters web site can be found at:  http://www.broadneckathletics.org/index.cfm?action=main.boosters. The BHS Music Boosters web site can be found at http://www.bhsmusic.org/Boosters.

These organizations do wonderful work supporting our students and those who work with them.  I encourage you to support their efforts.

On or about September 30, your son or daughter will bring home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form.  Please help us by filling out the information requested and returning it to AACPS in the self addressed stamped envelope provided.  The Federal Government gives localities payments to make up tax dollars that cannot be levied on Federal Property (Ft. Meade and the USNA for example).  Last year, AACPS received about 3 million dollars based on the information provided on these forms.

Please help us receive all of the funds to which we are entitled by completing and returning this form.

The opening of school has been good and we have now settled into the “routine” of schooling. As I walk the halls, observe in the classrooms, attend events and interact with students and staff, I am continually struck by the quality of the work that is being done by students, faculty and staff. Broadneck High School is a great place for students and the adults who work with them. I am proud to be associated with such a fine school.
