Broadneck Boys 2011 Soccer Preview: The Work Never Stops

The Bruins are ready to prove they are still a force to be reckoned with after losing 12 seniors from last year's team.

The boys' soccer team has a difficult task in front of them to replace 12 seniors that took the Bruins to the 4A East Region final in 2010.

Coach Sean Tettemer will now rely on this year's senior class of nine players to try and repeat last season's success.

Leading that group will be senior goalkeeper , a two-time all-county selection. He will be joined by senior Brandon Hanger and juniors David Keen and Austin Maxwell as captains for this year's squad.

The four captains represent the majority of the team's varsity experience—otherwise, this year's Bruins team is fairly young.

The Bruins will look to their captains to maintain a high level of play as they continue to push the rest of the county.

"Every time we go out, we're going 100 percent into every tackle," Niedermeier said. "We go hard in everything."

Coach Tettemer is pleased with how his squad is responding so far.

"I think they're very hungry to try to achieve success," Tettemer said.

Despite a lack of varsity experience, the Broadneck players believe they might actually be better than last year's 13-4 team.

"I think we're a little more technical this year and that can get you a long way," Hanger said, who will be expected to help carry the scoring load for the Bruins.

Up top, Hanger will partner with senior Loic Barret to spark the Bruin offense.

Coach Tettemer said that his teams have traditionally never had a big-time scorer, but always managed to find ways to score just enough to be successful.

After a tough preseason that included games against the likes of Archbishop Curley and McDonough, the Bruins are off to a bit of a rocky start offensively.

Maxwell stressed his team's ability to finish better with their opportunities inside the attacking third. A few goals and Broadneck will be able to couple its hard work with some confidence, something Hanger believes the team needs a little more of, but that will also take the Bruins far.

Tettemer and company hope that their difficult preseason will bode well for in-county play.

"We're going to try to improve each day," Tettemer said.

It's a mentality that he has passed along to his players.

"We have a lot of heart. So we can get through tough games just by going in and having more passion than the other team and by working hard," Keen said.

Keen will patrol the midfield along with Maxwell and senior Mitch Darden.

Broadneck will host Glen Burnie on Tuesday, as in-county play begins. The Bruins hope all their hard work will pay off as they aim to repeat and even surpass last year's success.

"We're working every day to get better at everything and we're having fun doing it," Niedermeier said.
