Broadneck High's First Pom Team

A new group merges dance and cheer at BHS.

(BHS) offers students many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities; from sports teams to music groups or social clubs, hundreds of local students are taking advantage of these activities.

This year offers something new. The first Broadneck Pom Team is headed up by Spanish teachers Jennifer Kurdock and Ninette Beheler. The team members consider themselves a “cross between the school’s dance and cheerleading groups.”

“When you see people like the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, they're really pom teams, because they’re out dancing with pom-poms,” explained Kurdock.

Pom teams go by different names all across the country; drill teams, song leaders, and dance teams in other areas are similar to the pom teams in Anne Arundel County.

“We didn’t call ourselves a dance team, because we already have a Broadneck dance company here, but we’d love for a fusion of the two later on,” said Kurdock.

All pom team members are required to try out, and must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

With primary tryouts over in the summer, several of the pom team members have had the opportunity to grow closer to one another.

“My baton coach recommended I join the pom team,” said Broadneck freshman Judy Barron. “I thank her for it; we’re all a big family here.”

Barron and several others on the pom team spent a portion of their summer together at the Universal Dance Association camp in New Jersey.

“We learned three routines that we were evaluated on, and a couple more just for fun, over two days,” said sophomore and pom team leader Victoria Cross.

In the future, the pom team members hope to form a sort of coalition with the other Broadneck groups but, for the moment, they’re content with remaining a singular, cohesive unit.

The new pom team will be performing at all of the varsity football, and majority of varsity basketball games and at each pep rally. For any Broadneck student who would like to try out, contact Mrs. Kurdock at the school.
