Learn What's Happening at Broadneck Schools

Broadneck principals use newsletters to communicate about events at area schools.

Each month, the principals at Broadneck-area schools issue newsletters. Here is a collection of those that have been made available so far this month.

Schools not included in this listing have not yet issued their April newsletters. They will be included in a future article.

The full newsletter for each school has been attached to this article beneath the images.

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Find out what's happening in Broadneckwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

A special thank you to all the parents who participated in Career Day, there was a wonderful turnout!

Parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, your children worked hard on the Maryland State Assessments. They appeared rested and ready to show their best. Thank you for your support.

Recently, all grade levels are reporting a number of recess-related visitors to the health room. All teaching teams have addressed the importance of safe play and, in some cases, have structured recess differently.

On another safety-related subject, I am concerned about the students who are running around at the front of the building during dismissal. Buses and Vans are entering the circle at this time. Please ensure that your children stay away from the curb (and out of the trees). Thank you.

The school will be closed from April 2-9 for spring vacation.

Out of Area Transfer forms are due in the office no later than April 29th. Remember that out of area transfers are not permitted to ride an AACPS school bus.

The April calendar contains several annual events, including the Science Fair. New this year is Arnold’s first Science Technology, Engineering and Math night on April 19th from 6:30-8 p.m.. Parents will have an opportunity to witness a demonstration from members of the “24” Math Clubs in grades 3-5, & the Robotics Club, in addition to visiting the science projects in the multi-purpose room. See the attached flyer for more information.

Report cards for the 3rd marking period will be sent home on April 23rd.

Jump Rope for Heart is scheduled for April 26th from 2:30-4 p.m. The Spring Book Fair begins April 30th.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Biggart, Principal

Happy Spring! March was a very exciting and busy month!

Thank you for all your support during MSA testing. Students were prepared, on time and they all worked very hard and did their best!

We wish our fifth grade students success as they take the MSA Science test, April 17th—May 4th. We request that students once again are rested, nourished and on time to take this important test.

Many of our students showcased their talent in March! Some of our students had artwork displayed at various art shows. We thank Ms. Karmosky and Mrs. Whittemore for developing the artistic talents of our students and for the many hours they spend preparing for the art shows. I hope you got to see the Talent Show! We have many talented students at Cape St. Claire Elementary School! We thank Mrs. Caughron, Talent Show Coordinator, and the Talent Show helpers who gave many hours to ensure everything went smoothly!

Thank you to Mrs. Elizabeth Wolin, the Destination Imagination School Coordinator, and to all of the parents who put in many hours working with our creative students. We had 2 Cape St. Claire Elementary School teams compete in the South Central Regional Tournament. Both teams represented our school well. The Golden Dragons team consisted of Maddie Riser, Aidan Honse, Brady Fitzgerald, Jordan Edelschein and Kara Mestanas. The Team Manager was Mrs. Mia Riser. The Unicorn Hippies team consisted of Matthew Wolin, Ari Callow, Emily Shipley, Josh Barraza, Jack Bragaw, and Keegan Houser. The Team Managers were Mr. Dan Wolin and Mrs. Amy Cohen-Callow. A big congratulations goes out to The Unicorn Hippies as they earned a 1st place finish and will be going on to compete in the DI Maryland State Finals on April 14th at UMBC. We wish them Good Luck!!

The annual Grandparents’ Day was a success. It was a memorable day for all.

The Maryland School Assessment (MSAs) are over for another year, and as in the past, I am sure our students performed well. I want to thank all faculty and staff for their hard work and preparation. Scores do not usually arrive until the summer, but once we do receive them they will be shared with all stakeholders. Thank you to all the parents, as well, for stressing the importance of the MSAs, for having your students attend during the testing days, and for encouraging them to do their best. Great Job!!

It is spring, and it is the time of year we would like you to revisit the dress code policy with your student (refer to page 5 of this newsletter). It is also a good time of year to stress compliance to our school rules. Please remind your students to Be Prepared, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful. With your support and cooperation, we can continue to provide a positive learning environment for our students and staff.

A reminder: the PTSO Spring Fundraiser will be held on April 13th from 6:30–9:30 PM, in the school cafeteria. This year the format will be a talent show featuring individual students and student groups who auditioned throughout the month of March. The cost of admission is $5.00, and tickets may be purchased ahead of time, using the form in this newsletter, or they may be purchased at the door. Children under 5 years of age are free. Performers do not have to pay admission, but are asked to bring in something for the “backpack” program.

Chances to win an iPad3, a Kindle Fire, or a Kindle Touch may also be purchased for $5.00, again, either the night of the talent show or by sending money in on Fridays with your student. The form to purchase raffle tickets is also available in this newsletter. Pizza, drinks, and snacks will be available for purchase the night of the talent show.

We have a strong and involved PTSO group, and this coming school year will be a re-building year because many of our parents who have been active in the past are moving on to high school along with their students. Likewise many of our parents will be returning for yet another great year at Severn River Middle School, but the more people who are involved, the better it is for our students.

If you are interested in becoming involved with the PTSO, meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the Media Center. All officer positions are elected, and we also need someone who would be interested in support positions. Please see page 2 for more detailed information.

If you are interested in any of these roles, will you please contact me be phone at 410-544-0922 or by email, jeyet@aacps.org

Our Spring break will be from April 2nd through April 9th, inclusive. School will resume on Tuesday, April 10th. Please encourage your students to be ready to make the fourth marking period a strong academic finish to the 2011–2012 school year!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Six Broadneck High School students have been recognized as 2012 Carson Scholars. These outstanding students are among 5,200 from across the country to receive this prestigious honor. Their academic achievements and service to their communities are what makes them stand out as future leaders. Congratulations to: Blair Bristow, Ryland Bristow IV, David Cattano, Else Drooff, Adam Greene, and Ashleigh Sullivan!

Five Broadneck High School students were First Place Winners at the recent AACPS County Science Fair. Jeanne Luning Prak and Beatrice Lunsford-Poe combined their efforts to win in Environmental Sciences. Jacob Lettie won in Mathematics, John O’Keefe won in Plant Science and Alexandra Page won in Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical. Congratulations!

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7–11. Thanks in advance to Broadneck High SGA, Key Club and the Music Department, along with the various organizations that provide teachers with goodies during the week. I hope that you will take the time to write a brief note to a teacher who has made a difference for your sons or daughters. That would be much appreciated. I certainly appreciate the work that our teachers do with their students.

This is a reminder to parents of Seniors that Commencement is on Friday, June 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. Parents of 9th, 10th and 11 th grade students are reminded that school will be closed that day so that Faculty and Staff may attend and participate in the Commencement Ceremony.

Now that warm weather has returned, it is time to remind parents to be sure your sons and daughters are appropriately attired for school. The issues we see with our young ladies are: very short skirts/shorts and low cut tops, and with our young men, it tends to be very saggy pants, extensively exposing boxer shorts, tank tops, and hats worn inside the building.

Please be sure that when your sons and daughters leave home for school their clothing is appropriate. If necessary, we will call you so that you can bring proper attire for him or her to wear in school. Thank you for your help with this matter.

I am constantly concerned about the threats and dangers that your sons and daughters/our students face in terms of drugs and alcohol. As warm weather returns and the end of the school year approaches, these concerns intensify. It is particularly important that graduating students and their parents understand that violation of certain School Board policies will prohibit the student’s participation in all senior activities. Specifically, School Board policies on possession, consumption, or distribution of alcoholic beverages, controlled or counterfeit controlled dangerous substances, non-controlled substances as defined by law or other intoxicants at any time during the last four weeks of school prior to the last scheduled day for graduating seniors or during the time between the last scheduled day and the graduation ceremony, whether the activity takes place on school buses, within a school building or upon any school property, or during any school related or Board sponsored activity, whether held on school property or at locations off school property shall prohibit the student from participation in all senior activities including proms, award and graduation ceremonies. The effective date of this provision is Thursday, May 3, 2012.

The Maryland State Department of Education has recognized Broadneck High School along with four other AACPS High Schools, for the achievement of our students on the 2011 Maryland High School Assessment (HSA) and for the improvement in performance among student groups between the 2010 and 2011 exams. Congratulations to our students and the faculty and staff who work with them.

I hope that you and your family had time to rest, relax and enjoy one another over Spring Break. From here on out, the days will fly by with AP and HSA Testing and events that mark the conclusion of our Senior’s high school experience. I wish you well as we enter this very busy and exciting time of year. Also, the BOE sent out a ConnectEd message to all families to inform them that the last day of school for students has moved up to June 8th. Therefore, that will adjust our underclass exam schedule, please see the updated schedule on page four.

Sincerely,

David G. Smith, Ph.D.

Principal
