Broadneck Sailing Team Competing in National Regatta

The sailing team from Broadneck will race against the best high schools in the country in May.

Broadneck High School’s sailing team is heading to a national sailing competition to test their mettle against the best student sailors in the country.

Twenty students from BHS will sail in the ISSA High School Doublehanded Championship for the Mallory Trophy in May, where 20 of the best teams in the country come together each year to compete in a fleet sailing championship regatta.

David Schoene, a parent volunteer for the team, said getting to the nationals was always a goal in the back of their minds, but getting there was an exciting journey. The team was neck and neck in its penultimate regatta in Christchurch, VA.

“It really came down to the last set of races,” Schoene said. “It was a very tight race between the top five schools.”

Ultimately victorious, the team was thrilled to be headed to a national competition, Schoene said.

The team is composed of students from BHS, but the club isn’t part of the athletics program at the high school. Instead, parents help organize the team and get them to each regatta.

The Mallory Trophy event will be in Chicago, May 11-12.
