Schools Encourage Parents to Participate in American Education Week and Community Forum on Discipline

Opportunities for parents to get more involved this week include classroom visits at local schools and a forum to discuss student discipline and alternative education programs.

Schools in Broadneck and all over the country are kicking off American Education Week with special activities and opportunities for parents to visit classrooms or thank a teacher or staff members through Nov. 19. The National Education Association (NEA) sponsors the annual week to generate public support for education.

Tuesday is designated by the NEA as Parents Day so parents can experience firsthand what a school day is like for students. Check with your child's school to see what their specific policy is, but will allow parents to visit on Tuesday and Wednesday without notifying teachers in advance. Parents should just sign in at the office.

Inviting parents into the school encourages parental involvement, according to the NEA. When parents understand what is expected of their children, they are better able to offer them support to help them succeed.
