Broadneck Student Named National Merit Scholar

Evan Uthus became the latest Broadneck student to achieve the National Merit Scholarship.

A recent Broadneck High School graduate was named National Merit Scholars for his academic performance.

Evan Uthus, who will study anthropology at the University of Maryland in the fall, was named as the latest Broadneck student to achieve the National Merit Scholarship.

Four other Anne Arundel County students also received the designation recently:

  • Sarah Baker, who will study applied mathematics at Claremont McKenna College in California
  • Cailin Oakes, who will study earth science at the University of Minnesota
  • Amelia Hallworth of South River High School, who will study epidemiology at the University of Maryland
  • Xuefei Nou of Old Mill High School, who will study bio-engineering at the University of Maryland
National Merit scholars receive college-sponsored awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

In total, 190 colleges and universities subsidized nearly 4,300 awards nationwide this year, and 11 National Merit Scholars were named for the class of 2013 across the county, according to the press release.
