Broadneck Tri-M Serves the Community

Local student musicians share their time and talents with others.

On a beautiful weekend spring day you would expect teens to be enjoying activities with their friends, relaxing with family, or studying, but recently, local musicians from Broadneck High School spent a day off playing music for a very appreciative audience.

Students from Broadneck’s Tri-M Music Honor Society recently performed musical numbers for residents of the Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Annapolis. This activity was just one of many the Tri-M students perform during the school year.

Tri-M is a program of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of music education. Their international honor society recognizes secondary music students for musical ability, academic excellence, school involvement, and community service.

Students are invited to apply for Tri-M membership if they are involved with a music program at the school. New members are initiated in the fall.

The amount of activity produced by the local chapters really depends on the school, and Broadneck High is one of the busiest in the county.

From performing for seniors and preschoolers to volunteering at musical events and assisting directors with a variety of duties, Tri-M members are required to earn a set number of volunteer hours to maintain membership status.

"The Tri-M students at BHS are the best of the best," said Sandra Balderson, Music Director at the high school. "They involve themselves in music as well as serve as ambassadors of our school. We are so lucky to have these kids represent  our school in such a positive way."

As a jazz trio finished up a familiar tune at Sunrise last weekend, the residents shouted out questions and thanks.

“Where are you from?” asked one. “You all sound wonderful,” exclaimed another. “This keeps us young,” said one appreciative listener who tapped her foot to the music.

After replying to their questions, the students began another number with a wink and a grin.

Lynn Norton, Activities and Volunteer Coordinator at Sunrise, said her residents always appreciate visits from younger people. “It is great of the kids to come and share their talent with us. We are very grateful.”
