Chesapeake Academy Students Perform 'The Well at Waldris End'

The story is an international adaptation of 'The Frog Prince' which was nearly finished when Disney announced its cartoon film.

Renaissance drama students at Chesapeake Academy in Arnold have been busy during their first semester workshopping a new musical, The Well At Warldis End.

The drama course concluded with a production of the play, staged in the school's theatre, according to a press release from the school.

The full-length musical was written by Severna Park locals Beverly Hill van Joolen and Berklee College of Music student, Skylar van Joolen. The story is an international adaptation of The Frog Prince which was nearly finished when Disney announced its cartoon film.

"We haven't seen the Disney version yet," said Beverly Hill van Joolen, who teaches and directs the drama program, but she said they plan to watch it over the holidays now that their show has been performed.

Music director Beth Wegner also teaches music at Chesapeake Academy and their accompanist was classical pianist, Ryan Shookman.

The director said the new show has been a big challenge, but also an opportunity for the actors.

"Working with original material gives the actors a chance to put their own mark on the characters and music," Hill van Joolen said.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Chesapeake Academy choose between four Renaissance classes each semester.

"Drama teaches students life skills such as time and project management, leadership, and pubic speaking, which will serve them well as they move on to middle school," said Hill van Joolen.

Chesapeake Academy accepts students pre-school through 5th grade and is an AIMS-accredited elementary school. For more information, please visit the website at chesapeakeacademy.com
