Class of 2011: Avery Wentworth

This Eagle Scout and academic star is headed to Maine and a career in environmental law.

Editor’s Note:  Broadneck Patch asked the guidance department at Broadneck High School to pick out some local student standouts that represent the unique makeup of the Class of 2011. This is the third installment in a series of interviews with these students.

After spending his early years in Atlanta, Avery Wentworth’s family moved to Annapolis where he went to school at Chesapeake Montessori and Severn School before coming to Broadneck High School as a freshman.

“It was a lot to take in at first being used to a smaller environment,” said Wentworth. “But the kids here are friendly and I quickly adjusted.”

Wentworth, son to Rand and Sue Wentworth of Annapolis, also experienced success at BHS right from the start. With a 4.47 GPA, it is easy to see why he was recognized by the Social Studies department as being one of the top students of the year. His interests include history, politics and environmental issues.

“I really enjoyed my classes with Mr. Ellenberger,” said Wentworth. “His teaching style is so different from others. Students have the opportunity to express their ideas and focus on current events. It made all of us so much more aware of what is going on outside of high school.”

Aside from his high level of academic achievement, Wentworth is also an Eagle Scout, a member of the Honor Society and Key Club, and runs cross-country (Captain of the BHS team) and indoor track, where he earned 10 letters.

This fall, he heads to Bowdoin College in Maine. The small campus size and track team drew him in when he visited. “They have a strong government and politics program,” said Wentworth, “and I was able to get to know the professors.”

He hopes to be a history and political science major and then move on to law school and work in environmental affairs. (His father works for an environmental nonprofit.)

Though he is ready to move on, he will miss things about BHS.  “I will miss my cross-country teammates. I learned a lot from them including how success academically goes hand in hand with things outside of the classroom.”
