Class of 2011: Hemi Thaker

A mentor, scholar, and "unsung hero," this Broadneck senior works hard to make this community a better place.

There are many reasons to admire BHS student Hemi Thaker. She is a superior student, taking eleven Advanced Placement courses through high school. She is a hard worker, as evidenced by her leadership roles in the Student Government Association, the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils, the Key Club and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Group.

Perhaps her favorite role at Broadneck High School has been her work with the Senior Mentor program that fosters support between successful senior students and students in need of academic assistance and guidance.

Thaker is president of the group and works diligently to make it a meaningful experience for both the senior mentors and the students who benefit from their help.

“Mr. Harris, the advisor for Senior Mentors, was one of my favorite teachers,” said Thaker. “He is very motivating, making us believe we had to do the best we can.”

Thaker, daughter of Priti and Vipul Thaker of Arnold, is probably one of the busiest students at BHS. Her work with SGA has involved her in numerous school events, fundraisers, and pep rallies. Her tireless efforts and commitment led to her winning the “Unsung Hero” SGA award this year.

“Behind every successful activity there are always some people who are dedicated to the cause, committed to the event, and hardly ever garner recognition for their efforts,” said Amanda Brunner, SGA Advisor. “The ‘Unsung Hero’ exemplifies leadership, organizational skills, and initiative—mostly behind the scenes.”

Thaker moved to the Broadneck area in seventh grade after having lived all over the East Coast and Canada. Her academic focus is fueled by her desire to become a physician, preferably a cardiologist.

“We have many doctors in our family,” said Thaker who is headed to the University of Maryland at College Park. “I know the amount of work and commitment it takes to be successful.”
