Class of 2011: Lauren Riffle

This talented Broadneck athlete is heading to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Editor’s Note:  Broadneck Patch asked the guidance department at Broadneck High School to pick out some local student standouts that represent the unique makeup of the Class of 2011. This is the first installment in a series of interviews with chosen students.

Lauren Riffle, daughter of Greg and Mindy Riffle, is a standout athlete, earning 12 out of 12 varsity letters for her participation in the BHS soccer and indoor and outdoor track programs.

Her accomplishments caught the attention of the Naval Academy, where Lauren will be headed soon and where she will participate in their cross-country track program. An impressive feat, considering there were 19,000 candidates vying for close to 1200 spots.

“I am the first in my family to go there,” said Riffle about her education pathway over the next few years. “My family is involved in the Navy Sponsorship Family Program so I have always thought about it.”

Aside from her athletic achievements, Riffle also has a 3.9 GPA and is involved in clubs like Best Buddies, has been in the band, and was a class rep for the SGA.  She is also involved in youth sports, serving as referee for her little sister’s games.

Riffle said her most memorable moments have been on the field.

“I love the rival games with Severna Park, and then going to states for the track team,” she said. "I will never forget my teammates."
