Area students took time out to consider world peace through art. They participated in the Pinwheels for Peace project. On September 21 students at planted pinwheels on the front lawn of the school.
“This was a great experience for the students on many levels,” said .
“They were able to learn about the history behind, and origin of, a number of peace symbols. They also had an opportunity for self expression as they created an original peace symbol.”
Youths nationwide first installed pinwheels back in 2005. According to the website, the project has grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to three and a half million pinwheels in 2010.
The campaign’s website describes what pinwheels are supposed to represent to youths.
“A pinwheel is a childhood symbol—it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, peaceful,” according to a statement on the Pinwheels for Peace website.
Baker is the lead art teacher at CMS. She said students were able to make personal connections between their experiences and their art.
“They built upon their visual vocabulary as they incorporated elements of good design into their symbol and most of all they contributed to their community with this visual collaborative statement for peace,” said Baker.
