Fourth-Graders at BES Win in Countywide Young Writers Contest

A poem and short story from these two 9-year-olds won best in the county among fourth-graders in a young writers contest.

Two fourth-graders at Belvedere Elementary School won writing awards in a contest that’s gathering the work of the best young authors in the state.

Nina Encarnacion and Madelyn Carter are both 9-year-old girls in the fourth grade at BES. And from among all the fourth-graders in the county, they were recognized by a panel of judges for their outstanding writing.

Encarnacion’s poem, “Rain” won first place, and Carter’s short story “The Lost Island” took second place.

The contest for young authors is being organized by the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council. The contest picks the best work among children in grades 2-12.

Carter’s story, “The Lost Island,” is about a family who is stranded after a boating trip.

“I just came up with the idea. I like to write stories a lot in my journal,” she said.

The contest only allowed for three typed pages, and Carter said she did her best to keep her story to those specifications.

Encarnacion’s poem, “Rain,” was inspired by an experience with nature, she said.

“It’s about how if a rainstorm of people can make a difference, what kind of world would we live in?” she said. “It was raining outside when I wrote it, and what’s where I got the idea for it.”

All winning entries in the contest will be published in an anthology, and each student author and his or her teacher will receive a copy. A reception honoring all young authors, first- and second-place state winners, their parents, families, teachers, chairpersons and judges will be held at the SoMIRAC Conference, on Wednesday, March 30 at the Hunt Valley Marriott in Hunt Valley, MD.
