Meet Broadneck High's New Guidance Counselor

Faith Culp has worked as a counselor since 1997 but this is the first time she's worked at a high school.

With all the changing faces of the new school year, possibly the most notable at is the new guidance counselor: Faith Culp. She replaced former counselor Marilyn Graham.

Although Culp has worked throughout Anne Arundel County since 1995 and as a counselor since 1997, this will be her first time working at the high school level.

“I worked for the [Anne Arundel] Community College (AACC) for three years, and after that spent a year working for an early education center," said Culp. “I worked for a few middle schools too, but this is the only level I have yet to work at”.

As an employee for AACC and later for Broadneck High, Culp noticed some similarities between the lines of work.

“Both at Broadneck and at [AACC], the actual school is seen more as a gateway to bigger and better things.”

One of the things Culp was most impressed by is that students want more rigorous classes, and how several of them couldn’t fit every AP and honors class that they tried to cram into their schedules.

“Students here certainly take advantage of the more rigorous courses,” said Culp. “It’s a lot easier for students to take their more advanced classes here, rather than at the community college, because it is something the colleges smile fondly upon."

Culp offered a tip for college-bound students.

“Colleges are looking for more of a trend that shows leadership and volunteerism, sometimes even over general GPA,” she said.
