MICH Kids Celebrate May Day

Students with the (MICH) in Arnold brought in May with flair on Tuesday afternoon.

The celebrations involved singing spring-themed songs, dancing around the May Pole, and creating a May Day flower basket.

Honoring the earth and celebrating May Day have become a tradition at Montessori International Children’s House (MICH). As a Maryland Green School, MICH incorporates being green in its practices, curriculum, and philosophy. As we marked the 42nd anniversary of the first Earth Day, MICH turned to even older traditions to celebrate the spring season and the greening of the earth.  

May Day is a traditional holiday in many cultures around the world  including England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. MICH students delighted parents and friends by singing spring songs and performing a traditional May Pole dance. They added a modern spin on the festivities by performing a square dance (Maryland’s state folk dance) and a choreographed rendition of “Jai Ho”. 

Just as Annapolis decorates doorways with flower baskets on May 1 so do students in Mrs. Mitra’s Primary class. They bring in their favorite flower and as a group assemble a large May Day basket that is then put outside the classroom door for all to enjoy.
