Poll Shows Most Agree That Schools Should Make Up Snow Days at End of the Year

The school board opted to keep the policy of tacking on snow days at the end of the year instead of trying other options and Broadneck Patch readers agree with this decision.

The school board recently discussed the calendar for the next two school years and decided to stick with the policy that in June.

We polled Broadneck Patch readers over two weeks to see whether they preferred to make up days at the end of the year or if they would rather since some parents said not knowing when school would end interferes with plans for summer vacations, camps and childcare.

  • The majority of respondents (59 percent) were in favor of adding days to the end of the school year.
  • As for losing days during spring break, only 40 percent felt that was a better option.

On Broadneck Patch's Facebook page, Dawn Maltese shared her thoughts in favor of adding days to the end of the school year.

"Many families plan travel early in the year and travel plans may include financial responsibilities," she wrote. "It is usually not known until December, Jan or even Feb if we need to make up snow dates. It's much easier to make adjustments to the end of the school year at that late date than to make spring break changes."
