School Board Recognizes Broadneck Elementary Parent for Volunteering

A "picture-perfect" volunteer earned special recognition for her hundreds of hours of service.

A parent volunteer with a flair for the photographic landed more than 500 hours of volunteer time and was recognized by the school board last week for her time.

Over the past five years, Kira Gleitz has made a name for herself at Broadneck Elementary School for her prolific work on the school’s yearbook photos. She’s always ready with camera in hand when there’s a big event, whether it’s a school field trip or capturing the moment when Principal Alison Lee ate a fried worm.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education recognized Gleitz’ volunteer work at their recent meeting by surprising her with a certificate and a bell in front of the audience. She was named volunteer of the month for January.

Gleitz shed a few emotional tears as board member Solon Webb read off her list of accomplishments, including being a classroom volunteer, a photocopier extraordinaire, a room parent, and the Parent Teacher Organization’s corresponding secretary.

“Perhaps it is her many hours as queen of the photocopier that inspired Kira to be the chairperson and chief photographer for the Broadneck Elementary yearbook,” Webb said during the ceremony.

Webb added that the board was proud to recognize such a "picture-perfect volunteer."

Last year, Gleitz surpassed 500 hours of volunteer work.

“It’s my pleasure, I really enjoy it,” Gleitz said.
