School System Shops for New Transportation Supervisor

The position makes recommendations on whether to keep schools open during bad weather.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools are shopping for a new head of transportation.

Longtime Transportation Supervisor Chris Carter retired from his position with AACPS in December, according to school system spokesman Bob Mosier. Since then, the acting supervisor has been Wanda McIntire.

The supervisor oversees all aspects of student transportation—including routing, bus management, driver administration, and develops policies to keep students safe while in transport.

Another key role the supervisor is responsible for is evaluating weather and road conditions, making recommendations on whether to close or delay school openings.

The school system came under fire from parents earlier this month after choosing to keep schools open when many roads were covered in ice. Acting Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins later apologized for the decision, saying it was "the wrong call."

The transportation director will play a key role in making future decisions, according to the position's job description.
