Severn River Middle Salutes Eighth Graders

Promotion ceremony sends students off to high school.

Some were excited, others were tired, and many relieved, but all eighth graders at Tuesday's promotion ceremony seemed ready to make the move to high school.

“I am ready to go,” said eighth grader Matt Kamens who will be marching in the marching band next year.

Kamens, along with other SRMS students in the school’s jazz band, provided some appreciated pre-ceremony entertainment for the crowd of family and friends in attendance, ready to cheer for their favorite student.

Assistant Principal Sid Molofsky welcomed students, staff, and guests to the ceremony, declaring that the students were now a part of the Broadneck High School Class of 2015.

Senior Class President Cole Dant delivered a speech that was full of memories in middle school, from the first day to the eighth grade social. He also gave credit for student success to the families and staff members who supported him and his classmates.

“They made sure that we got to school early for help or music practice and that we were studying instead of checking our Facebook pages or texting,” he said.

Principal June Eyet delivered an address to the audience, first observing the tremendous growth that middle school students experience.

“You came to us as young boys and girls and are leaving us as young men and women,” she said. “You have really changed academically, physically, and socially, and you have much to look forward to in high school.”

All students received a certificate of promotion and a BHS lanyard, and students with a 4.0 GPA were recognized during the ceremony.

The SRMS chorus students chose to end their final performance of the school year with a performance of “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway show Rent.

In her ending remarks, Eyet gave some valuable advice to the new high school freshmen.

“Choose a positive attitude, seeing what is good, what’s right, and what’s beautiful in yourself and others.”
