Severn River Middle School Music Department Brings Home Gold

Annual spring music trip provided local students a fun day at Kings Dominion and a huge amount of trophies to cart home.

Musicians from Severn River Middle School came home with top prizes Saturday after competing at the Music Showcase Festival at Kings Dominion.

Nearly 300 students and parent chaperones from the school boarded six coach buses to Richmond, VA, and seven musical groups came home with "superior" ratings. Seven soloists also earned "outstanding" ratings from the judges.

The students were members of the choral and instrumental performing groups at the school and competed with several other schools from the Mid-Atlantic region. After a morning of musical performances conducted by chorus director John Campbell and instrumental director Mike Tayman, the students spent the day at Kings Dominion enjoying the rides and attractions.

The day ended with an awards ceremony at the park where the students learned the results of the competition. The groups were all given a rating and medal based on a national adjudication standard as well as a trophy with their place in their competition category.

The following groups from Severn River earned 1st-place trophies and “Superior” ratings with gold medals: Concert Chorus, Shark Chorale, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, and String Orchestra.

Outstanding section trophies were given to the Jazz Band rhythm section and saxophone section and the Symphonic Band percussion section. Outstanding solo trophies were presented to Marisa Roper, Gina Mogelinski, Maddie Barnett, Nicole Reisinger, Annie Bowers, Garrett Hall, and LeAn Nguyen.

The awards ceremony was the highlight of the evening as the students cheered each group’s accomplishments and were rewarded for their year of hard work.

“I screamed so hard I lost my voice!” Haylee Meskow, an excited sixth grader, exclaimed.

The parents had their share of fun as well, and cheered alongside their children as Severn River dominated the competition.

“The students at SRMS are so blessed to have such a great music program!” parent JoAnn Escobosa said. “Go Sharks!”
