SRMS Principal Welcomes Students Back

Back to school night for SRMS is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 13.

The following message was written by 's principal June Eyet in the school's recently released August 2012 newsletter.

Now is the time everyone asks themselves, “Where did the summer go?”

The time certainly has flown by, and everyone here at Severn River Middle School has been working diligently throughout the summer to ensure the building is in order and everything is in place to guarantee a smooth start to the 2012-2013 school year.

We are looking forward to welcoming all of the students back in just a few short weeks, and we would like to extend a special welcome to all of the new sixth grade students and to their parents and/or guardians. Middle school is an exciting time, one filled with changes: intellectually, physically, and emotionally for your child.

The teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff are here to assist all of you in any way we can to support you and your child as they proceed on their journey to high school.

It takes all stakeholders, parents, students, faculty, and community, to accomplish our goals at Severn River Middle School. As a component, you, as parents, are to be commended for your support of your student(s), your community, and your school.

Middle school years are the most challenging of years and can cause quite a bit of angst and pride at the same time. It is heartwarming to see the growth of students from sixth grade through eighth grade as they begin the process of becoming young adults.

Our Back-To-School night this year will be held on Thursday, September 13th, at 6 p.m. Please remember to mark that date on your calendar so you can see our school, meet your student’s teachers, and walk through a typical schedule. Encore teachers and the Librarian will also be here to meet you and to discuss their programs.

While you are here you will have an opportunity to join the PTSO for only $12 per family! Being a member provides an opportunity to be involved with the school, and is a time to enjoy some camaraderie with other SRMS parents.  PTSO meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Media center, and we would love to have you join us!

With the recent release of the MSA scores, Severn River Middle School continues to score above the county and state averages; however, this year, SRMS did not meet our goal in special education reading. This area will be a focus for us this school year, and we hope you will encourage your student to do his/her best every single day. Also, if they are struggling academically, we do offer help on Wednesday mornings, during lunches, and after school (by appointment with the teacher) on Tuesdays and Thursdays when there are Activity buses.

Part of our role in middle school is to prepare our students to be successful in high school. With that in mind, we will continue to rely on data driven decision making to implement strategies and to rely on parent and community involvement to promote success for ALL students.

I will be on medical leave at the beginning of this school year, but I will be here in spirit!  I will be checking email, and will be in regular communication with administration, counselors, and teachers, throughout my convalescence.  We will move forward striving for all students to feel safe, and to be successful at SRMS.

Everyone is looking forward to the start of the new school year, and we hope your student is one who attends school regularly, does his or her best academically without being afraid to try more rigorous coursework, and who gets involved in the various clubs and extra-curricular activities available at Severn River Middle School— the BEST middle school!
