State Budget Cuts Hit AACC

The college will get $2.7 million less than initially expected due to state budget cuts.

As a result of , schools across Maryland are taking a hit, including community colleges.

 (AACC) President Martha Smith said Tuesday that the state cuts will result in a $2.7 million reduction in AACC's proposed 2012-2013 budget.

"It is very significant, and we will do what we can to get a resolution to this in the near future," Smith said. "We're monitoring the situation on an hourly basis."

The by its Board of Trustees, and is being reviewed by County Executive John R. Leopold and his staff before a proposal to the Anne Arundel County Council.

At Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting, Smith said community colleges across the state had their funding reduced by $20 million, 10 percent less than what was initially proposed.

Later in the meeting, the Board awarded contracts for a paving project for $472,945 and a roof replacement for the public services building for $223,740. The work for both projects is expected to be completed by the time fall classes begin.
