Students to Receive Hearing and Vision Screenings, Flu Vaccine

Anne Arundel County will screen the hearing and vision of some Broadneck students this month, along with giving the flu vaccine to students whose parents gave consent.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health regularly screens students for vision and hearing in area preschools, day care programs, elementary and middle schools, and students who are new to the county.

According to a release from the department, children are screened to detect problems that may cause issues in school and parents will be informed of any potential deficiency detected by letter.

Screenings of students will take place at the following locations in October:

Flu Vaccine

Students in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) have the opportunity to receive free flu vaccines between Oct. 17 and 28, provided their parents returned consent forms by Oct. 7.

“We are very appreciative of the Department of Health’s continuing partnership in this critical program,” schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said in a release. “This is a way to keep students healthy and in class, and reduce the stress of parents who may otherwise worry about their children becoming ill.”

The vaccine administered to students is FluMist, a nasal spray approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. AACPS and the department of health offer the vaccine to healthy children between the ages of 5 and 11 at their elementary school, according to a release.
