Schools

They All Screamed for Ice Cream

Belvedere Elementary School hosts family ice cream social.

With a long-standing tradition of supporting the students and families of Belvedere Elementary School, the school’s PTA hosted its second ice cream social last Friday with the intent of starting the school year off with a friendly gathering.

Around 400 people attended, twice as many as last year, to socialize with familiar faces and get to know a few more this year. With the steady rains of last week, this outing could not have been more perfectly timed and brought out many families. The cancellation of many local sports may have also attributed to the high attendance.

“It got all of the families out,” said veteran parent Susan Thornton.

Teachers, PTA members and volunteers, and families of the school packed Belvedere’s cafeteria to enjoy some of the 24 gallons of hand scooped ice cream with assorted toppings and a show performed by Kohl the Magician.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and it’s a great first event to be held by the PTA, “said Erin Leuders, a PTA member.

Kids of all ages were buzzing around the cafeteria meeting up with friends and classmates and meeting some of their new teachers, excited to introduce their parents to them.

“It’s fun to meet up socially with the school,” said Felicia Denn, a PTA member and a speech therapist at Belvedere.

While the scene in the cafeteria seemed to be all play and social oriented, there was much work going on to get the school population in the mood for the school year ahead. The PTA has planned many events for the school year and displayed both information about the upcoming events and a sign-up for volunteers to solidify the coordination that is involved with each of them as well as strengthening the relationship between families attending the school, the PTA and the educators and administrators.

PTA President Dawn Orso said, “The PTA supports the school and the community by holding public events as well as those intended primarily for the school. The ice cream social is one of the ways we can give back and set a positive tone for the start of the year.”

Fifth-grade parent Kathy Beutelspacher said, “It’s a great social event for the parents.”

Upcoming community (public) events to occur at Belvedere will be the Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 29, and the Holiday Shop on Saturday, Dec. 3.
