3 Broadneck Teachers Among 5 Finalists for Award

The nominations for teacher of the year were narrowed down to five finalists, three of whom teach at Broadneck-area schools.

Broadneck schools have three of the five best teachers in Anne Arundel County.

Five finalists were announced Tuesday for the upcoming teacher of the year award, to be announced at an awards banquet on April 16. Among those five finalists are three Broadneck-area teachers, according to a release.

Those teachers are Raven Bishop, an art teacher at ; Martha Gardner, a fifth-grade teacher at ; and Scott Rundle, a math teacher at .

The teachers were each visited by a group of officials including Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, members of the Anne Arundel County School Board, and the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. The officials delivered the finalists a bouquet of flowers as a way of congratulations.

The awards banquet will be held April 16 at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum, where many other teachers will be recognized. At the banquet, the final teacher of the year candidate will be announced. That winner will go on to represent the county in the state teacher of the year competition later this year.

Educators from three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school make up the field of five finalists announced today for the 2012 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year. The educators will be among 50 honored at the 26th annual Excellence in Education awards banquet on April 16 at the BWI Marriott in Linthicum.

The finalists, selected from a field of 15 semifinalists, are:

  • Raven Bishop, Severn River Middle School
  • Martha Gardner, Belvedere Elementary School
  • Mikki Loiselle, Pershing Hill Elementary School
  • Julie Olson, Nantucket Elementary School
  • Scott Rundle, Broadneck High School

The banquet is presented annually in partnership by Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. In addition to outstanding teachers, the banquet also will honor local business and community partners that have forged critical partnerships with schools across the county, directly benefitting AACPS’ 76,000 students.

Superintendent Kevin Maxwell was joined by Board of Education, school system, and chamber officials this morning as they surprised the finalists by visiting classrooms with bouquets of flowers.

The public school finalists will be interviewed by a panel made up of educators, administrators, students, and business leaders. The Teacher of the Year will represent Anne Arundel County at the state Teacher of the Year competition later this year.

Three private school educators are in the running for the Anne Arundel County Private School Teacher of the Year.
