Broadneck's Star Kicker Takes a Stand for Student Academics

"Eventually there is going to be a time when football is gone and what they have to rely on is all their academic success," Greene said.

Broadneck High School kicker Adam Greene, who broke state and county records during his career with the Bruins—both for distance and number of field goals—was awarded a $4,000 scholarship this week based on academic performance.

The 50th Annual Scholar Athlete Awards recognized the talents and brains of five student-athletes, awarding each a $4,000 scholarship. A banquet held Wednesday in Baltimore gathered the athletes for a ceremony.

Greene was interviewed at the banquet by Gary Adornato in a video uploaded to YouTube Thursday. In the video, the Broadneck senior sticks up for academics, saying they're more important than sports in the long run.

After the event, Greene's mother Debbie told Patch that her son was chosen for consideration in the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony in August.

Greene has chosen to attend Unviversity of Maryland in the fall. He was offered a preferred walk-on spot on Maryland's football team. Maryland recently said it would join the Big 10 for the 2014 football season.
