In this year’s Young Author’s Contest for the county, Paul placed first in his grade for short stories and Catherine placed second for poetry. They competed against other third-graders from all county elementary schools. As a first-place winner, Paul will move forward to compete with the other county winners in the state Young Author’s Contest.

Paul’s story is a tale of an historic voyage to an unknown island, while Catherine’s inspiration came from her beloved cat, Jetson.

Secrets of Success

Both Paul and Catherine are also involved in many other activities. They both are excellent students in Mrs. Josephs’ class. Paul plays the cello, practices karate and plays baseball. Catherine is a serious swimmer year round (swimming at the the Naval Academy Aquatic Club in the winter and Harting Farm Swim Club in the summer), is in the Brownies and attends St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church.

They have known each other since they were in Creative Beginnings Preschool together.

Nominator

“I give these students all the credit.  We don’t require our students to enter the contest. They have to want to make that extra effort. Though they didn’t make it last year with their entries, they tried again. We are very proud of them.” - Mary Jo Young, Reading Teacher for Belvedere
