Broadneck Girls Trounce Arundel, 56-39

Kameron Ward scored 28 points for the Bruins in the rout of the defending state champions.

The Broadneck girls basketball team won its second straight conference game Friday, trouncing the defending state champion Arundel Wildcats 56-39 behind a scorching performance by sophomore guard Kameron Ward.

The Bruins overcame a sluggish first period and used great ball movement and superior hustle to grab a double-digit lead in the second half and never looked back.

Ward scored 28 in the contest, including 19 points in the second half. She nailed nine free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

"We had a lot of really great energy," Broadneck head coach Erin Thorne said. "We didn't practice yesterday, so we really had to come out and make up for everything we didn't get to work on with great hustle."

Broadneck appeared rusty in the first period but opened the second with a 10-2 run to go up 15-12. The Bruins closed the first half up 22-18 after Jones hit a floating layup at the buzzer.

The Bruins displayed good ball movement through much of the second period, while Arundel head coach Lee Rogers pleaded with the Wildcats to do the same.

The Bruins scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to go up 32-20, going on to outscore the Wildcats 16-3 in the third period. Arundel would not get within 15 points for the rest of the game.

"We always run in practice, so that helped us outlast them," Ward said. "And we hit all of our shots, so that always helps get us pumped up."

Arundel went without its typical scoring output from senior forward Breonna Pinkcett, who was held to just six points. Tiffany Grant led the Wildcats with 14 points, including two three-pointers when the game was no longer in doubt. Sandra Davis, who led Arundel with 16 points in a win over Southern last week, scored 4 points and none in the second half.

The Broadneck girls next play at Severn School at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21.
