Broadneck Gymnasts Rely on Team Manager

Anna Dubiansky takes on many roles as Team Manager for the school's gymnastics team.

Broadneck High School’s gymnastics team is fortunate to have senior Anna Dubiansky as their Team Manager. She is organized, easygoing, detail-oriented and radiates a positive attitude, all qualities needed to be a successful Team Manager.

Team managers are often the unsung hero of many sports teams. They spend most of their time behind the scenes, supporting the athletes and the coach, and helping to ensure the smooth operation of the program.

Before the season was even underway, Dubiansky (Dubi to her friends) was busy cleaning the team’s equipment locker and getting the competition uniforms ready for the incoming team. She also had all the necessary paperwork organized and ready for the gymnastics coach, Danielle Mayne.

“Anna really frees me up to concentrate on coaching the team by taking care of the many details necessary to run the program,” said Mayne. “This year I don’t have an assistant coach, so Anna really handles a lot.”

To make sure all the equipment is set up and put away each day, Dubiansky has created a rotation schedule for each practice. She then oversees the set up and take down of the equipment and she’s always willing to lend a hand when needed. She is also responsible for ensuring the First Aid kit is stocked and ready for the variety of minor injuries and muscle pulls that are common to athletes.

A unique characteristic of a gymnastics meet is that many solo competitions are happening simultaneously and at different locations. Given the specific requirement that the coach must be at each gymnast’s event to speak to the judge, Dubiansky makes it possible for her coach “to be at two places at once.”

“I give the judges the required paperwork for each athlete, I submit their names and the order they will be performing. I also videotape every (Bruin) gymnast’s routine for the coach to study later,” Dubiansky said.

Dubiansky had been on the gymnastics team for two years before opting for team manager.

“I like being team manager because I can still interact with the team and practice my gymnastics but I don’t have the pressure of competing,” Dubiansky explained.  “I also enjoy helping the girls with their floor routines; it’s a lot of fun.”

Dubiansky also admires Coach Mayne. “I really like her and help out so she doesn’t have to worry about everything,” said Dubiansky. “When we competed at Old Mill last week, I saw her picture hanging up on the wall from when she was on the gymnastics team in high school. She was one of the best in the state.”

After Dubiansky graduates this spring, she will be attending Penn State University. She hasn’t decided on pursuing gymnastics at Penn but is leaving her options open. At BHS, her support and dedication will be missed when next season rolls around.
