Broadneck Hockey's Championship Season

The local team earns the Eastern Region Championship title and respect from their peers.

Last Thursday night, Broadneck's Varsity Ice Hockey Team wrapped up what can only be described as a phenomenal season by finishing as Eastern Region Champions with a record of 13-1-1.

The Bruins compete in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League that encompasses 58 schools in Maryland. The team operates out of the McMullen Hockey Arena at the U.S. Naval Academy where most of their games are played, but they also travel to Easton, Piney Orchard, Bowie, and The Gardens Ice House in Laurel.

Most of the teams in the league are unsanctioned and don't compete as a county supported team, but all the teams are unofficially attached to their local high school whose students make up 100 percent of each team.

The Bruins may not be financially supported by the county, but they are enthusiastically supported by the Broadneck student body. Go to any game and you will see the stands packed with loyal supporters cheering for their team and rooting for the players. But all this support is not without merit. This team has earned it through tough practices, finely tuned plays, and superior athleticism.

They owe a lot of their skill to the experience and coaching expertise of Head Coach Kevin Rooney, Assistant Coach Steve Wood and the leadership of the team captains Harris Feldman, Josh Schwartz and Sam Donnelly.

Rooney, a former professional hockey player, said the Bruins play a European style of hockey.

“We want to move the puck up the ice as quickly as possible. Throughout this season we’ve been focusing on speed and short, very aggressive passing," he said.

This approach was apparent in the Bruins 10-7 win over the Easton Warriors when 11 different Broadneck players registered at least one point and senior Josh Schwartz recorded a hat trick which helped lock up the Bruin’s No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

In Broadneck’s first playoff game, the Bruins eliminated Easton with a 7-4 victory, setting up the Bruins to play Kent Island for the Eastern Region Championship. During regular season play, Kent Island was the only team to beat the Bruins, but in a very rowdy McMullen Arena, the Bruins were able to avenge that loss. In an overtime tiebreaker, the Bruins won in a 3-2 shootout to capture the Eastern Region Champion title with a score of 4-3.

“I told the guys when they came here tonight that this game will be one you'll never forget, and that's how it turned out," Rooney said.

The Bruin’s final playoff game of the season against Urbana decided which team would go up against Winston Churchill for the 2011 Capital Cup Title. Unfortunately, it proved to be the Bruins' demise in a 6-1 loss. Goalie Brandon Noyes was busy with 45 shots on goal and half of those saves. Sam Meaux, senior forward, scored the lone point for the Bruins.

Although almost half the team will be graduating this spring, many strong players will return to the team next year for what they hope will another outstanding season.
