Broadneck Summer Swim Report

With three out of five regular season meets done, there are already some standouts in the Broadneck area.

Greater Annapolis Swim League teams are headed into the July 4th break with swimmers already performing like champs and with one eye towards the end of season medal meets.

The league has completed three of its five regular season meets; strokes have improved and records smashed.

Five Broadneck area teams compete in the 20-team league including Indian Hills Swim Club as well as Ulmstead, Bay Hills, Cape St. Claire and Harting Farm swim teams.

The tightest meet to date was on Saturday when Indian Hills Swim Club squeaked past Bay Ridge Swim Team 227-226.

“It was very exciting,” said Indian Hills’ head coach Sandy Avery. “We have had close meets before, but this felt tight from the start. In points it came down to the final relay, but every stroke was close.”

Avery added that this meet was especially satisfying after the previous week’s difficult loss to Davidsonville. “ We were missing a number of our swimmers that week,” she said of the 274-184 drubbing.

In other meets this past week, both Cape St. Claire and Bay Hills suffered crushing defeats. The Bay Hills Barracudas swam at home without 30 of its team members and lost to the Hillsmere Hammerheads, 286.5-171.5. Hillsmere 14-year old Gavin Colley set several pool records during the meet. He and Bay Hills 14-year old Noah Yanchulis shared a new pool record in the 50-meter free with a time of 26.94. Yanchulis also broke the 13-14 boys 50-yard breaststroke record on Saturday with a time of 36.27.

The Cape Dolphins swam up a division this weekend, losing by about 100 points to the perennially strong Davidsonville Gators. In their two previous meets, however, the Cape team saw a number of records fall at the hands of several swimmers.

The Cape Dolphins opened their season with a 253-218 loss to Ulmstead. During that meet however, three Cape swimmers – Corey Byrne, Emma Edwards and Cody Edwards broke pool records while Byrne, Cody Edwards and Max Madden each won all four of the races they swam.

“There were a lot of very close races, but the most fun was the boys free relay at the end,” said Cape league representative Katherine Woods. “The squads traded places several times before Ulmstead just edged Cape out at the end.” Also this season, Cape topped Severn River Swim Club 298-161.

The Harting Farm team is 2-1 on the season with wins over Hunt Meadow (274 -175) and Mears (303 - 144). The lone loss was to Mayo Swim team with a score of 266.5 - 191.5. Three Harting Farm swimmers -- Nick Gatton, Casey Prentice and Khrysten Stolins -- have set team records this season.

Indian Hills opened their season not only with a 244.5 to 214.5 win over Hillsmere, but had four swimmers break 8 team records. Yvonne Schere set new standards in 11-12 girls 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley.

Sarah Jackson broke the 15-18 girls 50-yard butterfly record, Devin McClure broke records in the 9-10 boys records in the 50-yard freestyle, 25-yard butterfly and 100-yard individual medley while Geoffrey Eckert set new records in the boys 15-18 50-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley.

Possibly the best local rivalry meet to date was a week ago when Bay Hills beat Ulmstead 267-207. It is the first time the teams – long-time friendly neighborhood rivals – have swum each other in two years.

“The Ulmstead meet by far has been our best to date,” said Bay Hills’ head coach Ellen Hays. “Not only did we have something like 164 best times in that meet, but the kids were excited and had fun swimming against classmates. There is neighborhood pride in that meet.”
