Broadneck Swimmers Wrap Up Season

The Greater Annapolis Swim League wrapped up its regular season Saturday.

The Greater Annapolis Swim League wrapped up its regular season Saturday.

The five-meet summer season passed quickly with swimmers now focused on the upcoming championship meets this week. The league’s fastest swimmers compete Sunday morning in the Gold Medal meet at Bay Ridge in Annapolis. The middle tier of swimmers compete Saturday in the two silver medal meets at Hunt Meadows and Hillsmere swim clubs, both in Annapolis. The bronze medal meet is Wednesday at Mears Marina Annapolis in Eastport.

Of the five Broadneck peninsula teams in the league, Ulmstead Swim Team was the sole team undefeated in its division. Its only loss came early in the season in a “bye week meet” to friendly neighborhood rival Bay Hills, which swims in a higher division. Ulmstead wrapped up its stellar season this past weekend with a 244-205 win over the Truxtun Park Penguins of Annapolis.

Proud of her team’s division record, Ulmstead head coach Colleen Winans said “A lot of our kids will be away for the medal meets but we should have some good performances at each.”

Indian Hills Swim Club also finished with a 4-1 record on the season. Its only loss was at the hands of perennial league frontrunner Davidsonville. Indian Hills did finish their season with a win, however, defeating the Severn River Swim Club 310-150 in an inter-divisional matchup.

Several of the Indian Hills Water Llamas ended their regular season with record-breaking swims. Sammy Dupcak broke the girls 7-8 25-yard breaststroke mark with a new time of 21.13. Devin McClure dropped the boys 9-10 25-yard backstroke mark to 16.09. Nathan Wojtowicz swam the boys 13-14 50-yard breaststroke in 35.60 while Christopher Dell swam the boys 15-18 50-yard freestyle in 25 seconds flat. Geoffrey Eckert dropped the boys’ 15-18 50-yard breast record to 32.82.

Cape St. Claire wrapped its regular season with a 239.5 to 217.5 win over Evergreen Swim Team of Severna Park. The Cape Dolphins finished with a 3-1 division record and 3-2 overall because of an interdivisional loss to Davidsonville.

“There were some great swims in addition to the win,” said Katherine Woods, team manager for the Cape team. “Corey Byrne, Cody Edwards and Max Madden, each swimming four events, took first place in all of their events. Skyler Todd, Garrett Lanham, Emma Edwards, Nikki Brandemarte, Nick Howard, Carrie Jackson and Ethan Gazelle also scored in all of their events.”

The Bay Hills Barracudas swims in the top division of the league and its 1-4 record belies the effort and progress put forth by its coaches and swimmers. The boys in particular fared well this season winning most of their meets and setting new records in the process. In its final meet, the Barracudas fell to the Bay Ridge Marlins 257-203.

The Harting Farm Hammerheads finished an up and down season with a 259-199 loss to Indian Landing.
